Israeli general election looms

It's official: Israel is heading towards a nationwide election. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni informed President Shimon Peres on Sunday that she has failed in negotiating the formation of a new government, and the latter will therefore most likely call for general elections.  
 
"The nation will choose its leaders," Livni told Peres, adding that she was certain of her victory in a general vote.

Murderer of 86 year old Israeli affiliated with Islamic Jihad

Police said Friday that the interrogation of the Palestinian terrorist who killed an 86-year-old Israeli civilian and wounded an officer during a stabbing attack in Jerusalem's Gilo neighborhood Thursday morning revealed that he had apparently acted alone despite the fact that his family is affiliated with Islamic Jihad.

It was further revealed that the terrorist, 21-year-old Muhammad al- Badan, bought the knife he used to stab the Israelis on the morning of the attack.

Proposed law in Iran enacts harsh new penalties for leaving Islam

A chilling story about the plight of Christians living under radical Islamic rule:

A month ago, the Iranian parliament voted in favour of a draft bill, entitled "Islamic Penal Code", which would codify the death penalty for any male Iranian who leaves his Islamic faith. Women would get life imprisonment. The majority in favour of the new law was overwhelming: 196 votes for, with just seven against.

Iranian boy to undergo surgery in Israel

Israel extends a compassionate hand to a 12-year-old Iranian boy suffering from brain cancer:

The boy, who already underwent surgery in Tehran, was later admitted to a Turkish hospital, but his Ankara physicians soon discovered their facility lacked the technological and medical expertise needed to properly treat him.

The Turkish doctors suggested the family seek medical assistance in Israel, and so they did, through Israeli liaison Jacob Levin.

NATO General "not positive" Iran can be stopped

A sobering assesment from NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer:

"I am not positive about the world being able to stop Iran from fulfilling its ambitions," he said during a conference in France which was quoted by Reuters.

"It is a major challenge to prevent Iran from continuing to strive to get the bomb," Scheffer said, adding that his concern was "that the Security Council, as we speak, is rather incapable of coming to further conclusions on further sanctions."

MCC: Ahmadinejad has "moderated" in the past two years

CAMERA's Dexter Van Zile calls our attention to a recent statement from the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), one of the sponsors of last week's dinner with the Israel-hating Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad:

We believe that the [Ahmadinejad's] public comments have moderated somewhat over the past two years. When challenged regarding his comments about "wiping Israel off the map," Ahmadinejad has said to us in previous meetings and, at last, in interviews with both CNN and the Los Angeles Times in late September, that he is not talking about a military solution. Rather, he supports the "one-state" solution, a political resolution in which Israelis and Palestinians elect a single government to represent both peoples.
